Russian Deputy PM Borisov reaffirms Moscow's support for Syrian president's policy

DAMASCUS. June 22 (Interfax) - Moscow sees the results of the recent presidential election in Syria as the population's vote of confidence in the policy of President Bashar al-Assad and expects a new Syrian government to be formed as soon as possible in order to start tackling all the problems facing the country, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov said at a meeting with al-Assad in Damascus on Tuesday.

Russia expects Syria's new government to begin working promptly, Borisov said.

"You are well aware of Russia's fundamental position in favor of the need for unconditional respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Syria, the Syrians' right to choose their future themselves in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254," he said.

Russia stands ready to continue doing all it can to help restore peaceful life in Syria, Borisov said.

"Today's meeting of the co-chairs of the intergovernmental commission allowed us to discuss in detail the current state of affairs in bilateral cooperation and to outline ways of intensifying this cooperation in different areas," he said.
