Percentage of vaccinated residents smaller in Moscow than in any other European city - Mayor Sobyanin

MOSCOW. May 21 (Interfax) - The percentage of residents vaccinated for Covid-19 is smaller in Moscow than it is in any other European city; it could be much higher, but Muscovites are unwilling to get vaccinated, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.

"The percentage of residents vaccinated [for Covid-19] is smaller in Moscow than in any other European city; it is way smaller compared with some cities. [...] Over the entire period, 1.3 million have been vaccinated [in Moscow] out of 12 million residents. On the one hand, this is a substantial number, but it could be at least twice as high," Sobyanin said in a video posted in his personal blog on Friday.

The conditions for vaccination for Covid-19 have been created in Moscow, however, the population has not been enthusiastic about the vaccination process, he said.

"It wouldn't matter if the whole story was over. But infections are still happening, and people are still getting sick and still dying. Yet they are unwilling to get vaccinated," Sobyanin said.

The mayor urged Muscovites to get vaccinated and said every person has only two options: either to get vaccinated or get sick. "There is practically no third option," he said.

The vaccination process began in Moscow in early December 2020.
