Kazan school shooting suspect was expelled from vocational school in April

KAZAN. May 11 (Interfax) - The young man who was detained at the site of the shooting spree in Kazan's School No. 175 went to a vocational school at the TISBI University of Management, but was expelled in April, the press service for the educational establishment told Interfax.

"Ilnaz Galyaviyev was a fourth-year student at a TISBI vocational school. He was expelled in April 2021 due to academic failure," the press service said.

"He was a quiet and non-confrontational student during his study," the press service said.

"He was always neat and calm, he was respectful towards his fellow students and faculty," a university representative said.

"Ilnaz started his academic and professional practice in December, he had not attended vocational school since January. He stopped making contact with his group curator. He did not come to the project defense and three state exams, and he was expelled for that reason," the press service said.

According to earlier reports, a shooting spree began in Kazan's School No. 175 on Tuesday morning. According to the city's mayor's office, seven children and a teacher were killed.

Eighteen other school students were hospitalized, six are in serious condition. Three adults were also injured.

A 19-year-old man was detained at the site.

State Duma member Alexander Khinstein said on Twitter that "the weapon permit (to possess a Hatsan Escort PS smoothbore gun) was issued to Ilnaz Galyaviyev shortly before the tragedy, on April 28."

Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of Tatarstan, told reporters the 19-year-old detainee had no accomplices.

A source has told Interfax the man will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if he is sane.

A murder case has been opened. The case will be investigated by the central office of the Russian Investigative Committee.

May 12 has been declared a day of mourning in Tatarstan.
