Blagoveshchensk doctors perform successful open-heart surgery under burning roof

BLAGOVESHCHENSK. April 2 (Interfax) - Doctors from a cardiology center in Blagoveshchensk performed a successful surgery in a building on fire and evacuated together with their patient after the surgery was over, a source in the center told Interfax.

"It was an open-heart surgery, and it had to go on. The surgery was successful. The patient and the surgical team were evacuated upon the completion of the operation," the source said.

The patient was transferred to the regional hospital.

"He is stable, and his condition is not life-threatening. He is now recovering from surgery in the regional hospital's ICU," the source said.

The roof of the Blagoveshchensk cardiology center caught fire on Friday. The fire spread to an area of 1,600 square meters. About 120 people left the building constructed in 1905-1907. The preliminary cause of the fire established by the regional prosecution service is faulty electrical wiring.
