Russian and U.S. experts start work to extend New START - Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. Jan 25 (Interfax) - Russian and U.S. experts have already started practical work aimed at extending the New START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty), Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"Experts are actively working on this issue. It is practical work, and it has begun," she said.

When commenting on the prospects of relations with the new U.S. administration, Zakharova said that Russia's views on this issue are well-known.

"Relations failed to reach the appropriate level and only became more complicated" when Barack Obama and Donald Trump served as U.S. president, she said.

"We assume that our relations should improve, and there are multiple fields where we simply must do it: they are international stability, security, disarmament, and, of course, issues that are directly related to the life of citizens of the two countries and communication between them," Zakharova said.
