Kyrgyz govt resigns as PM Japarov ends his tenure due to victory in presidential election

BISHKEK. Jan 21 (Interfax) - Acting Kyrgyz President Talant Mamytov signed an order on Thursday to announce the resignation of the Kyrgyz government and the end of the tenure of Sadyr Japarov, who won the presidential election, as prime minister.

"Mamytov has signed an order terminating the tenure of Prime Minister Japarov, according to which Japarov's resignation as prime minister has been accepted. The order also confirms the resignation of the incumbent Kyrgyz government," the presidential press service said on Thursday.

Members of the Kyrgyz government will continue to fulfill their duties until a new government is formed, and First Deputy Prime Minister Artyom Novikov has been tasked with acting as the prime minister, it said.

On Wednesday, the Kyrgyz Central Elections Commission announced the final results of the early presidential election of January 10. Japarov won the election with 79.2% of the vote. The Kyrgyz president-elect is due to be sworn in on January 28.

Japarov came to power in Kyrgyzstan last October, as a result of protests against the outcome of the parliamentary elections that developed into riots. Seeking to stand in the presidential election, Japarov resigned as acting president and suspended his premiership on November 14, 2020.
