Georgian ruling party leader Ivanishvili decides to quit politics

TBILISI. Jan 11 (Interfax) - Billionaire and chairman of ruling party Georgian Dream Bidzina Ivanishvili has announced that he has decided to quit politics.

"I deem my mission to have been accomplished. I have decided to completely withdraw from politics and let go of the reins of power. I am leaving my position as party chairman, as well as the party itself," Ivanishvili said in a statement released on Monday.

The Georgian party leader described his approaching 65th birthday as a key factor in his decision. Ivanishvili said he will return to the lifestyle he was living before he went into politics in 2011.

Ivanishvili said he is sure that his withdrawal will strengthen the party, rather than weaken it, that the party will become more vibrant and motivated, and the Georgian authorities will be even more energetic.

"I'm sure that the people of Georgia will appreciate the step I am taking today, as it is dictated by the same interests that brought me into politics," Ivanishvili said.
