Russia records highest daily number of new Covid-19 cases since start of pandemic, 17,340 - HQ

MOSCOW. Oct 23 (Interfax) - Russia has registered a record high daily number of new coronavirus cases, 17,340, and 283 associated deaths over the past 24 hours, the coronavirus response headquarters said on Friday.

"Over the past 24 hours, 17,340 cases of the novel coronavirus infection Covid-19 were confirmed in 85 regions, including 4,807 (27.7%) identified proactively, without any clinical symptoms manifested," the headquarters said.

Covid-19 rates in Russia began growing in September, when the daily number of new infection increased from 5,000 to 10,000 by the beginning of October, and then soared to up to 15,000 new cases per day over the subsequent two weeks. As many as 16,319 new Covid-19 cases were reported on October 20. The figures declined somewhat to 15, 700 on October 21, and 15,971 on October 22.

The highest daily number of new Covid-19 cases was registered in Moscow, which saw 5,478 new infections in the past 24 hours, which is the city's record high daily number of new cases in the fall.

Moscow reported 4,413 new Covid-19 cases on October 22. The Russian capital saw 5,049 new coronavirus cases per day on October 16.

According to the headquarters, 2,779 patients were discharged from hospitals and another 62 died in Moscow over the past 24 hours.

Russia's Covid-19 total case count since the onset of the pandemic stands at 1,480,646 (+1.2%) in 85 regions. The overall related death toll is at 25,525. A total of 1,119,251 people have recovered, including 11,263 in the past 24 hours, the headquarters said.

Russia has conducted more than 56.2 million Covid-19 diagnostic tests to date, including 546,000 in the past 24 hours, the Russian Federal Service for Health and Consumer Rights (Rospotrebnadzor) said. A total of 338,798 people remain under medical observation in the country.
