Russia aims to launch pilot project to produce hydrogen at nuclear plants by 2023

MOSCOW. Oct 23 (Interfax) - The Russian government has approved an action plan for the development of hydrogen energy to 2024, a cabinet order (No. 2634-r) dated October 12 and posted on the official website for legal information shows.

The plan calls for implementing a pilot project by 2023 to produce hydrogen using the capacity of Russian nuclear power plants.

State nuclear corporation Rosatom, the Industry and Trade Ministry, Energy Ministry, Economic Development Ministry and Education and Science Ministry, among others, have been named responsible for carrying out the project.

In order to improve the regulatory and legal framework and national standardization system, industrial watchdog Rostekhnadzor, Rosatom, the St. Petersburg Mining University and other interested organizations are supposed to assess the completeness and sufficiency of the regulatory and legal frame work regarding nuclear hydrogen energy by 2022, and work out a concept by 2023 to ensure safety in production, storage and transportation of hydrogen at nuclear power plants.
