Termination of New START would be sad, treaty works well - Putin

MOSCOW. Oct 16 (Interfax) - The termination of the Russian-U.S. Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) would be a sad event in terms of arms control, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"It would be extremely sad if the treaty ceased to exist and were not replaced by another fundamental document of this kind. New START has worked well all previous years, and it has played a fundamental role in limiting and containing an arms race and ensuring arms control," Putin said at a meeting with the permanent members of the Russian Security Council on Friday.

Russia "has developed new weapons systems that America doesn't have, at least for now," Putin said. "However, we aren't refusing to discuss that aspect, either," he said.
