Moscow warns U.S., EU against meddling in Belarus' affairs - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. Aug 25 (Interfax) - Russia has warned the United States and the European Union against any interference in the internal affairs of Belarus, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday.

"Russia is warning the U.S. and the EU against any form of interference in the internal affairs of Belarus, including open exhortations now being heard in several capitals for anti-governmental demonstrations," the ministry said in a commentary published on Tuesday after Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun.

During an exchange of views on the current situation in Belarus, "the Russian side emphasized the unacceptability of attempts to exert sanction and political pressure on Minsk with a view to undermining the launch of a mutually respectful dialogue between authorities and the public," the ministry said.

Biegun held separate meetings with Lavrov's deputies Sergei Ryabkov and Igor Morgulov, it said.

The diplomats "discussed pressing issues of the bilateral agenda, including the dialogue on strategic stability and the Russian-U.S. interaction to facilitate a settlement of the nuclear problem of the Korean peninsula," the ministry said.
