Russia sees fewer than 5,000 new Covid-19 cases per day for first time since April - HQ

MOSCOW. Aug 11 (Interfax) - Russia has recorded fewer than 5,000 new Covid-19 cases per day for the first time since the end of April, and 130 patients earlier diagnosed with the novel coronavirus have died in the past 24 hours, the coronavirus response headquarters said in a statement published on Tuesday.

"Over the past day, 4,945 Covid-19 cases were confirmed in 84 regions of Russia, including 1,403 asymptomatic cases (28.4%) identified proactively," the headquarters said.

This is the lowest daily number of new Covid-19 cases registered in the past 15 weeks. Russia reported 4,774 new coronavirus cases on April 23. The following day, the daily number of new Covid-19 cases soared to 5,800 and continued growing. At the height of the coronavirus epidemic, Russia reported more than 11,600 new infections on May 11, after which these rates began gradually declining. By August, the daily number of new Covid-19 cases was within the 5,400-5,100 range. The headquarters reported 5,118 new cases in the country on Monday, August 10.

Thus, Russia's total case count currently stands at 897,599, 15,131 patients earlier diagnosed with Covid-19 have died, and 703,175 have recovered (+6,494 in the past 24 hours).

According to the headquarters, on Tuesday Moscow recorded 694 new Covid-19 cases, 14 deaths, and 1,043 recoveries over the past day.

The press service of the Russian Federal Service for Heath and Consumer Rights (Rospotrebnadzor) said that Russia has conducted more than 31 million Covid-19 diagnostic tests by August 11, including 177,000 in the past 24 hours. A total of 239,495 people remain under medical observation.
