Russia detects over 8,500 new Covid-19 cases, all-time high number of deaths, 232, in past 24 hours - HQ

MOSCOW. May 29 (Interfax) - Russia has reported the all-time high of daily coronavirus deaths, 232, in the past 24 hours, while the daily growth in new cases has not changed much and slightly exceeded 8,500.

"Over the past day, 8,572 Covid-19 cases were reported from 84 regions of Russia, including 3,380 active asymptomatic cases (39.4%)," the coronavirus response headquarters said in a statement on Friday. The daily growth in new cases continues to decline; it currently stands at about 2.3%.

As many as 232 coronavirus-related deaths were registered in Russia in the past 24 hours, as against 174 on May 28 and 26. The all-time high number is now up by a third. This is the fourth record mortality rate reported by Russia since the middle of May. Rospotrebnadzor head Anna Popova said earlier that the mortality rate will spike after Russia passes the peak of the coronavirus epidemic.

By now, Russia has reported 387,623 coronavirus cases, 4,374 deaths, and 159,257 recoveries (including 8,264 patients discharged from hospitals over the past day). The number of active cases (the total number of cases minus all recoveries and deaths) currently stands at 223,992. A third of coronavirus cases have recovered in Russia by now.

Russia retains the third position in the global coronavirus table (according to the Johns Hopkins University). Brazil ranks second (438,200 cases total, +26,400 in the past 24 hours), and the United States tops the list (1.72 million cases total, +22,500 in the past 24 hours).

Moscow reported 2,332 new Covid-19 cases, 76 deaths, and 3,474 recoveries over the past day. The cumulative number of cases has reached 175,829.

The Rt effective reproduction number has dropped to 0.95 in Russia (it stood at 0.97 on May 27-28, and 1.0 on May 25-26). The number has kept at 0.83 in Moscow for two consecutive days. The number is calculated on the basis of official reports from the operative headquarters and the formula provided by Rospotrebnadzor guidelines 3.1.0178-20 dated May 8, 2020.

Rospotrebnadzor said on Friday that Russia had performed over 10 million coronavirus tests by now, including 299,000 in the past 24 hours. Some 305,000 people remain under medical observation.
