Russia reports 8,371 new Covid-19 cases, 174 deaths in past 24 hours - response HQ

MOSCOW. May 28 (Interfax) - The day-by-day number of new coronavirus cases in Russia has not noticeably changed since Wednesday, while the daily deaths from Covid-19 again reached a record high number recorded on Tuesday.

"A total of 8,371 cases of the coronavirus infection were confirmed in 85 regions of Russia in the past 24 hours, including 3,560 active cases (42.5%) without any clinical symptoms," the country's coronavirus response headquarters said in a statement on Thursday.

Russia reported 8,338 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday. The day-by-day number of new coronavirus cases in the country on May 25 and 26 stood at around 8,900. The figure has been slightly over 9,000 since May 16 on average. The tally growth in Russia remained at the level of 2.3%.

Russia recorded 174 coronavirus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, the same number as on May 26. This is the highest daily mortality rate in the country to date, hitting a record high on three occasions. Head of Russia's Federal Service for Health and Consumer Rights (Rospotrebnadzor) Anna Popova said that a rise in Covid-19 mortality rates is expected after the peak of the coronavirus epidemic in Russia passes.

Given the latest increase, Russia's total Covid-19 case count currently stands at 379,051, including 4,142 deaths and 150,993 recoveries (8,785 people were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours). Thus, Russia currently has 223,916 active coronavirus cases (the total number of cases excluding all recoveries and deaths). The recovery rate stands at 39.8% at this point, or each third such patient.

Russia still has the world's third largest number of registered Covid-19 cases, according to Johns Hopkins University data. Brazil is in second place (411,800; +20,600 new cases in the past 24 hours), and the United States is in first place (1.7 million: +18,200 new cases in the past 24 hours).

Moscow reported 2,054 new Covid-19 cases, 71 coronavirus-related deaths, and 3,793 recoveries on Wednesday, the response headquarters said. Given the latest increase, Moscow's total case count currently stands at 173,497.

The Covid-19 spread rate in Russia remains unchanged from Wednesday's levels, standing at 0.97 (in Russia without Moscow - 1.03, 1.02 on Wednesday). In Moscow, it has declined a little - from 0.85 to 0.83.

Rospotrebnadzor said on Thursday that Russia had already performed more than 9.7 million tests to identify the novel coronavirus, including 285,000 in the past 24 hours. A total of 300,000 people remain under medical observation in the country.
