Guangxi drafting new sugar regulations

Beijing. February 9. INTERFAX-CHINA - The government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China's top sugar producing region, is seeking public feedback on draft proposals intended to boost its sugar output, state media reported Feb. 6.

Under the proposals, new sugar factories should have production capacity for at least 5,000 tons per day, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

Sugar processors will also need to ensure that at least 30 percent of their output is derived from sugar crops.

According to industry observers, the plans aim to phase out small-scale factories and improve efficiency.

Guangxi's sugar production totaled 7.1 million tons sugar in 2010, more than 50 percent of China's total output, Xinhua added.
