Toshiba, Techsnbexport begin uranium-sales JV talks
TOKYO. Feb 9 (Interfax) - Toshiba Corp. has begun negotiations with Russia's OJSC Techsnabexport (Tenex) on the creation of a joint venture intended to sell enriched uranium, Toshiba announced on Wednesday.
Tenex has been providing Japan with Uranium since 1999. The island country has 55 nuclear-powered generating units with overall output capacity of 47,500 mWt. Tenex and Toshiba inked a protocol of mutual understanding in May of 2009 that provided for the creation of uranium-storage facilities in Japan that would guarantee the country's nuclear power plants the fuel they need.
Toshiba's Wednesday statement did not specify how much investment would be involved, or how ownership stakes would be allocated. But the company did said that cooperation between Toshiba and Russia would be strictly limited to the peaceful use of nuclear power.
