Guangdong Province reports its first swine flu death this year

Shanghai. February 11. INTERFAX-CHINA - A 55-year-old man died from swine flu Feb. 9 in Shenzhen City, the first death from the disease in Guangdong Province, the provincial health department announced Feb. 10.

Shenzhen is a city of nine million inhabitants bordering the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

There have been 143 reported cases of swine flu in Guangdong Province so far this year, the announcement said. Seven of the cases were characterized as severe.

Meanwhile, Beijing has reported 195 cases of swine flu this year, including four that resulted in death, the local Beijing Daily reported Feb. 9.

Listed pharmaceutical companies with swine flu products notched gains on Feb. 10. Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd.'s shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange surged by the daily limit, while shares of Hualan Biological Engineering Inc. on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange were up 6.11 percent.
