Chinese New Year period rings up 26 bln text messages - MIIT
Shanghai. February 16. INTERFAX-CHINA - China's mobile phone users sent 26 billion text messages during the week-long Chinese New Year holiday (Feb. 2 to Feb. 8) earlier this month, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Feb. 16.
The figure - equivalent to 20 messages per person in China - was up 13 percent year-on-year.
Between New Year's Eve (Feb. 2) and the second day of the Chinese New Year (Feb. 4), 15.6 billion text messages were sent by mobile subscribers from China's three main network operators, up 20 percent on an annual basis, MIIT said.
Beijing topped Shanghai for the most messages sent on New Year's Eve - 980 million against 920 million messages.
