China's State Council sets energy targets for 2015

Shanghai. March 7. INTERFAX-CHINA - China's State Council has set targets for the country's non-fossil energy consumption, energy intensity, and carbon intensity for 2015, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao reported to the People's Congress in Beijing on March 5.

According to the council's report, non-fossil energy consumption will account for 11.4 percent of the country's total primary energy consumption by 2015, up from 8.3 percent in 2010.

Furthermore, energy intensity, or energy consumption per GDP, will drop 16 percent from 2010 levels by 2015. The government also plans to cut carbon intensity, or carbon dioxide emitted per GDP, 17 percent from 2010 levels by 2015.

Han Xiaoping, Chief Information Officer for China Energy Net, told Interfax that the targets are in line with the country's previous 2020 energy goals.

China's 2020 targets include having non-fossil energy consumption account for 15 percent of total primary energy consumption, while carbon intensity will be reduced by 40 to 45 percent from 2005 levels.

Han noted that China will place a ceiling on coal consumption for 2015 in order to meet targets. "The control on coal consumption will create brilliant markets for renewable energy and energy saving in next five years," Han said.
