Maximum height of tsunami waves near Kuril Islands reaches two meters

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. March 11 (Interfax) - The Sakhalin Tsunami Warning Center continues registering tsunami waves near the Islands of Kunashir, Shikotan and Iturup.

"Our equipment has registered that tsunami waves near Kunashir Island rose to a maximum height of 140 centimeters, and 23 centimeters outside the town of Kurilsk on Iturup Island. Tsunami waves registered near the village of Burevestnik on Iturup Island were visually up to two meters high, and tsunami waves near the village of Malokurilskoye on Shikotan Island up to one meter high. No areas have been flooded. Buildings have not been damaged and no one has been killed," a center spokesman told Interfax.

However, the possibility of higher tsunami waves approaching the Kuril Islands remains, he said.

The tsunami alert earlier declared by the authorities is still in force.
