Baidu Qiyi video portal launches kids' animation channel
Shanghai. March 11. INTERFAX-CHINA - Baidu Inc.'s online video portal Qiyi has launched a children's animation channel with original Chinese-language content, a marketing representative for Qiyi told Interfax March 11.
Baidu's large user base from its search business will help the channel compete with similar offering from Sohu.com Inc. and Kumi, said the representative, who declined to be named. The channel presently hosts more than 11,000 licensed animated videos, the representative added.
The number of animated shows made in China has grown 30 percent annually since 2006 and reached 385 last year, China Securities Journal reported March 9.
Baidu launched the Qiyi video portal in April 2010, shortly after raising $50 million from U.S.-based private equity firm Providence Equity Partners, Interfax previously reported.
