TOMSK. March 14 (Interfax) - Russian Electronics, part of the Russian Technologies state corporation, will begin construction of an LED manufacturing plant at Tomsk's special technology park in May 2011, Russian Electronics head Andrei Zverev said on Monday.
"The land has been allocated, the project has been drafted. Once spring arrives we will begin construction, deliver equipment and train specialists," Zverev said at the ceremony where he signed documents on the project with the authorities in Tomsk region.
Construction of the plant will take 18 months "from the laying of the first brick to the ribbon cutting," he said. Thus, the plant is scheduled for startup in late 2012.
"Investment in the portion of the project in Tomsk - it's a big project - will total about 6.5 billion rubles," Zverev said.
Tomsk region Governor Viktor Kress commented: "This is one of the most serious projects in the region and it is practically in the home stretch."
Russian Electronics plans to create three centers for production of LED components: in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Tomsk. They will engage in manufacturing the sapphire substrate and encapsulation of the chips. The finished product will be delivered to subsidiaries of Russian Technologies. The entire project will cost 20 billion rubles, according to an estimate made in May 2010.
