Japanese nuclear power plant accident poses no threat to Russian Far East - Kiriyenko

NOVO-OGARYOVO. March 15 (Interfax) - Rosatom CEO Sergei Kiriyenko said even the worst-case scenario with Japan's nuclear power plants poses no threat to the Russian Far East.

Kiriyenko said at a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, citing Rosatom experts' analysis, that slug melting is possible at all of the six units of the Fukushima 1 nuclear power plant (three operational units and three non-operational units).

At the same time, Kiriyenko said that "will not cause a nuclear explosion."

"In the worst-case scenario at the plants and a worse situation with wind direction, there is still no threat to the Far East," Kiriyenko said.
