Belarus, Russia to build highly efficient, safe NPP together - Belarusian prime minister

MINSK. March 15 (Interfax) - Russia and Belarus will jointly build a nuclear power plant meeting the top security and efficiency standards, Belarusian Prime Minister Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

"Belarus and Russia will build an efficient and safe nuclear power plant. This issue is especially sensitive to us. You know that April 26 will mark 25 years since the Chernobyl disaster, and so this is a momentous event for us against the background of this and the latest developments in Japan," Myasnikovich said at a meeting of the Belarus-Russia Union's Council of Ministers in Minsk on Tuesday.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Russia possesses "a whole arsenal of methods to ensure safe operation of nuclear power plants, and they will all be employed in the Belarusian project."

Moscow and Minsk had signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in building the first nuclear power plant in Belarus earlier on Tuesday.
