ZTE to build Malaysian 3G network

Shanghai. March 16. INTERFAX-CHINA - ZTE Corp., a leading telecommunications equipment provider in China, has signed an agreement to build an enhanced third generation (3G) network for Malaysian network operator U Mobile Sdn Bhd (U mobile), ZTE announced March 15.

ZTE will deploy the 3G network in major cities across central and northern Malaysia, according to the announcement. The network will utilize High Speed Packet Access + (HSPA+) and Long Term Evolution (LTE) technologies.

The network will have an initial downlink speed of 42 megabits per second (Mbps) but reach 84 Mbps within 12 months of becoming operational. The announcement did not disclose a construction timetable or level of investment for the network.

Malaysia's central government is prioritizing Internet coverage as part of its 11th Economic Transformation Programme, a state initiative to turn Malaysia into a high income economy by 2020, the announcement added.

As of February 2011, ZTE was testing 65 LTE networks in countries across Europe, North America, the Middle East and the Asia Pacific region.
