Russian fishermen working far from Japanese NPP disaster zone

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. March 17 (Interfax) - Sakhalin fishermen are not working near the Japanese Island of Honshu, a source at the Sakhalin Fisheries Agency told Interfax.

"Our fishing boats are fishing sea urchin off the South Kuril Islands, which are close to the Hokkaido Island, and there is no threat of radiation there so far," he said.

All the other vessels are fishing Alaska Pollock in the Sea of Okhotsk, he said.

"As a rule, our fishermen bring sea urchin, crab and shrimps to Japan. Now we are fishing sea urchin and Alaska Pollock. The latter is mostly taken to Vladivostok, as well as to China and Korea," he said.

All the Russian vessels, crewmembers, passengers and cargo arriving from Japan to Sakhalin and Kuril seaports, as well as aircraft coming from Japan are screened for radioactivity, first deputy head of the Sakhalin customs Yevgeny Ryabtsev said.
