Development of nuclear energy unavoidable because of high power demand - Chubais

MOSCOW. March 17 (Interfax) - The Development of nuclear energy in the world will continue despite the catastrophe at Fukushima-1 Nuclear Power Plant in Japan, owing to the enormous demand for electricity, Anatoly Chubais, the former head of RAO UES Russia and general director at OJSC Rosnano, told journalists on Thursday.

Chubais said that he disagreed with opposition to nuclear and alternative power sources. He added that it is necessary to develop both bio-energy and geothermal energy but this will not make it possible to avoid using nuclear energy in the future.

"The demand is colossal," Chubais said, adding that nuclear, heat and alternative energy sources should develop.

He added that the extent of the disaster in Japan is enormous but it is not worth "making conclusions on a wave of emotionality."
