Retail trade rises 3.3% in February - Rosstat

MOSCOW. March 18 (Interfax) - Retail trade in Russia expanded 3.3% in February 2011 year-on-year to 1.346 trillion rubles.

Turnover was down 25% compared with January 2011, Rosstat said in materials.

Food, including alcohol and tobacco, made up 49.7% of the total, up from 49.1% in February 2010. Retail turnover in food rose 2.7% to 676.9 billion rubles and non-food turnover was up 3.8% to 676.9 billion rubles.

Retail trade in meat, including poultry and canned meat, rose 1.8% in February, while inventories of those items increased 4.6% as of March 1, 2011 compared with February 1. Sale of fish and seafood was down 1.9% and 2.8% respectively. Dairy sales rose 2.8%, while dairy inventories increased 0.5%. Sale of groats declined 0.8% and inventories increased 5%.

Retail trade in food rose 1.1% in the first two months of the year to 1.334 trillion rubles, while turnover for non-food products was up 2.6% to 1.358 trillion rubles.

Registered outlets and individual entrepreneurs accounted for 87.5% of retail trade in February, while markets accounted for 12.5%, down from 13.3% in February 2010. Retail turnover at the markets totaled 168.3 billion rubles in February.
