China to grow green food industry during 12th Five-Year Plan

Beijing. March 23. INTERFAX-CHINA - China intends to quicken development of its green food industry during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015), the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) said March 21.

China hopes to raise the number of green food producers from 6,391 last year to 7,500 by the end of 2015, said Wang Yunhao, director of the MOA's China Green Food Development Center (CGFDC), at a meeting in Chongqing Municipality.

The move is aimed at improving the industry's competitiveness and boost rural incomes, Wang said.

The CGFDC oversees standards for green food, which is defined as food grown using little or no artificial fertilizers and pesticides.

Output of green foods exceeded 100 million tons in 2010, according to figures from the CGFDC.
