Shandong power consumption hits 89 TWh in Q1 2011

Shanghai. April 12. INTERFAX-CHINA - Shandong Province's power consumption rose 14.42 percent year-on-year to 89.70 terawatt hours (TWh) in the first quarter (Q1) of 2011, according to statistics released April 12 by the provincial government.

Power consumption saw its biggest gain in the service sector, surging 24.28 percent on an annual basis, the government said.

Meanwhile, the province's electricity imports for Q1 skyrocketed 176 percent year-on-year to 9.13 TWh, according to the statistics. Industry observers attributed the jump to state initiatives encouraging China's energy-rich western provinces to boost their electricity exports to the more populated coastal regions.

Shandong's GDP was RMB 3.94 trillion ($596.97 billion) in 2010, the third largest of China's administrative regions after Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces.
