Russia wants to cooperate with Sweden to make nuclear plants safe

STOCKHOLM. April 27 (Interfax) - Russia has offered to join forces with Sweden in seeking accident-free operation of nuclear power plants.

"Russian safety technologies for nuclear power plants are the best in the world," Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told a news conference, adding that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the UN nuclear watchdog, confirms this. "There has been minimal criticism after all the inspections," he said.

Special attention has been paid in Russia to nuclear safety after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident, the premier said.

In Russia nuclear plants generate 16% of the country's electricity and in Sweden "nearly twice as much," Putin said. "Today we are speaking of the need for more extensive interaction in ensuring the safe operation of nuclear power plants," he said.

Russia exports nuclear fuel to Sweden and offers the Scandinavian country cooperation in the disposal of spent nuclear fuel.
