Medvedev asks prosecutors to charge fines for bribery more actively

GORKI, Moscow region. May 4 (Interfax) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has instructed Prosecutor General Yury Chaika to formulate measures that would help apply new penalties for bribery more broadly.

Prosecutors participating in trials should insist on fines as punishment for accepting and offering bribes more actively, the president said.

"It is necessary to propose alternative kinds of punishment in the form of fines more actively at trials," Medvedev said.

Chaika, for his part, said that the Prosecutor's Office had already drawn up its recommendations regarding the new law and "would forward them to the constituents of the Russian Federation today or tomorrow."

Chaika said he hoped that prosecutors and courts would pursue a more differentiated approach when selecting a type of punishment.

"This law harmoniously complements Russia's anti-corruption legislation. Its main goal is to undermine the economic foundation of corruption and to make accepting bribes unprofitable. In my opinion, these amendments should be effective," he said.
