Samruk-Kazyna head agrees to join Gazprom board of directors
ASTANA. May 31 (Interfax) - The head of Kazakhstan's National Welfare Fund Samruk-Kazyna, Timur Kulibayev, has agreed to join the board of Gazprom.
"I have given my consent and will be waiting for the elections to the board," Kulibayev told reporters on Tuesday in Astana.
"The offer has been made and is now under consideration of Gazprom board of directors," he said.
Previously, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said that non-residents cannot act as state representatives on the board of directors.
Earlier, several media outlets reported that Kulibayev and rector of the Russian National Economy Academy Vladimir Mau might replace the Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko and Economic Development Ministry Elvira Nabiullina on the board of Gazprom.
According to the Russian daily Kommersant, the head of Gazprombank, Andrei Akimov, was also nominated to the board as a state representative. Thus, the number of state representatives on the board of directors may increase from six to seven.
The media also reported that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who now heads the Nord Stream committee of shareholders, may replace one of the state representatives on Gazprom board of directors.
