Belarus asks IMF for new credit program

MINSK. June 1 (Interfax) - The Belarusian authorities have asked the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to implement a new credit program, the IMF offices in Belarus have told Interfax.

The Belarusian government confirmed this information in a press release on Wednesday.

"The Belarusian government and the National Bank forwarded an application for a new stabilization loan to the IMF on May 31," it says.

"Consultations regarding a relevant government and National Bank of Belarus action program will be held within the framework of an IMF mission, which will start working in Belarus on June 1, 2011," it says.

"During its work, the mission will consider the current economic situation in the republic, discuss measures being taken by the government and the National Bank to stabilize the situation on the domestic currency market, and decide on whether the IMF can support the macroeconomic policy being pursued in the country," the government said.

It did not specify the size of the loan Belarus has applied for.
