Russia, EU need food safety space based on new roles - Federal Service

MOSCOW. June 2 (Interfax) - Russia and the European Union need a food safety space based on totally new principles instead of harmonization of Russian and European requirements, Federal Veterinarian and Phytosanitary Control Service head Sergei Dankvert told Interfax.

"An analysis of the latest events shows that the European food safety system has failed and the source of the infection is still not found," he said.

"This is particularly alarming amid the latest pressure for harmonization of Russian and European norms and universal use of the European [food safety] system," he said. "In fact, Russia and the European Union should discuss the development of a totally new system, which will provide genuine food safety," he said.

The Service may offer the methods, which have proven their efficiency in Russia, to the European Union, Dankvert said.

The Service has sent an inquiry to EU health authorities concerning the outbreak of E-Coli infection in European countries. The Service insists on the thorough investigation of events and the submission of full information.

Russia banned the imports of fresh vegetables from EU states on June 2.
