Russia's vegetable import ban does not violate WTO standards - chief negotiator

MOSCOW. June 3 (Interfax) - Russia's restrictions on imports of vegetables from the European Union do not go against the World Trade Organization (WTO) standards, said Maxim Medvedkov, the head of the Russian delegation at the negotiations on joining the WTO.

"The WTO rules do not ban restrictions on food imports in the case that they can cause damage to people's health or lives. Any WTO member is entitled to this, and Russia has and will have this right after joining the organization," Medvedkov said in commenting on remarks by EU officials claiming that Russia's vegetable import ban goes against WTO principles.
