Russians support merger of donor regions with regions living on subsidies - poll
MOSCOW. June 20 (Interfax) - Russians generally support the idea of the enlargement of regions, while the majority of Muscovites oppose the merger with the Moscow region, Levada Center told Interfax on Monday.
The center polled 1,600 adults in the middle of May.
Fifty percent of the respondents said they supported the enlargement idea and noted that donors should be merged with regions living on subsidies.
Twenty-eight percent of the respondents voiced the opposite opinion, and 22% found it difficult to answer the question.
Forty percent of Muscovites approved the merger of the city of Moscow and the Moscow region. Forty-six percent disapproved of the idea, and 14% said they did not know.
The idea gained the support of 56% of Muscovites with low incomes and was opposed by 52% of well-to-do Muscovites. In all, the center polled over 500 residents of the capital city.
President Dmitry Medvedev declared the possible extension of the Moscow city limits and the formation of 'a capital federal district' at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum last Friday.
