Shanghai International Medical Center breaks ground
Shanghai. June 24. INTERFAX-CHINA - Construction began on the Shanghai International Medical Center in Shanghai's Pudong New Area on June 24, the local government announced the same day.
The center will include a hospital and several specialized treatment centers, according to the announcement. It is designed to provide high-end, non-reimbursable medical services for Chinese and foreign nationals.
The first phase of construction will focus on the main hospital and requires a total expenditure of approximately RMB 800 million ($123.65 million), the announcement said.
Investment will come from Shanghai International Medical Center Investment Management Co. Ltd., a joint venture (JV) established in March 2010 by state-owned Shanghai International Medical Park and eight private investors.
The hospital will have a total of 500 beds and is scheduled to open by end-2013. Doctors will be recruited from Shanghai Jiaotong University's School of Medicine, as well as other leading hospitals in Shanghai.
Phase two of the project will see the construction of treatment centers including those for liver transplants, pediatric diseases and cosmetic surgery.
Singapore's Parkway Medical Group, which already operates clinics in Shanghai, will be invited to manage the medical center, the announcement noted.
