China's to boost EV production during 12th FYP

Beijing. June 25. INTERFAX-CHINA - China will produce 250,000 electric vehicles (EV) annually by the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan (FYP) period (2011-2015), a government official said at an industry meeting in Beijing June 25.

According to the automotive industry's 12th FYP, aggregate automobile production is expected to top 25 million over the same period, said Li Yizhong, vice chairman of the Committee of Economic Affairs under the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and former minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), at the 2011 Global Energy Efficiency and New Energy Automotive Industry Conference.

The development of the EV industry, as well as improving EV battery energy density, will be top priorities over the next five years, said Li.

Currently, EV battery energy density sits at 100 watt hours (Wh) per kilogram and costs between RMB 3 ($0.46) and RMB 5 ($0.77) per Wh, said Li. In an effort to make EV more competitive, energy density is expected to reach 150 Wh per kilogram, while reducing costs by approximately RMB 2 ($0.31) per Wh, he added.

According to Li Wuwei, Vice Chairman of the CPPCC, China will have one million EV and plug-in hybrid EV (HEV) by 2015, and five million by 2020, he said at the same meeting.

To stimulate the development of energy efficiency and the new energy automotive industry, government investment is expected to top RMB 100 billion ($15.44 billion) over the next five to ten years, said Chen Jiagui, Vice Chairman of the Asian Manufacturing Association.

China will also improve automobile fuel efficiency during the 12th FYP, said Li Wuwei. Average gas mileage will improve to 4.5 liters per hundred kilometers by 2015, down from 7.7 liters in 2010, he noted.

China's automobiles consumed 250 million tons of gasoline and diesel in 2010, Li Yizhong said.
