Goldwind to mass produce 6 MW offshore wind turbines by 2014

Shanghai. July 1. INTERFAX-CHINA - Xinjiang Goldwind Science and Technology Co. Ltd. (Goldwind), one of the largest wind turbine manufacturers in China, plans to mass produce six megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbines by 2014, the company announced June 30.

Goldwind assembled several of the six MW offshore wind turbines this year and plans to put at least one into operation in the first half of 2012, the company said.

Construction costs associated with offshore wind farms are approximately 40 percent higher than onshore wind farms. As a result, offshore wind farms require more efficient, large-scale wind turbines to offset the cost difference, said Goldwind.

China currently has 138 MW of offshore wind power installed capacity. The country plans to boost offshore wind power capacity to five gigawatts (GW) by 2015 and 30 GW by 2020, the National Energy Agency (NEA) said this year.
