Sinohydro could build pump hydro-storage plant in Ukraine

KYIV. July 4 (Interfax) - Ukrainian state hydropower concern Ukrgidroenergo has signed a memorandum on cooperation with Sinohydro Corp. Ltd., China's state-owned hydropower engineering and construction firm, concerning the construction of the Kanevskaya pump hydro-storage plant in the Cherkassy region.

"Sinohydro will conduct all necessary consultations and draft technical and commercial proposals for the project," Ukrgidroenergo said in a press release.

Sinohydro may also arrange funding for the project.

The government approved plans to build the Kanevskaya plant at the end of 2007 at a then cost of UAH 4.905 billion ($970 million, or $620 million at today's exchange rate). The plant would be commissioned in 2012-2015.

Ukraine's Energy and Coal Ministry on June 8 signed a memorandum on cooperation with Sinohydro on the construction of hydropower plants in Ukraine.
