Moscow breaks new summer power consumption record
MOSCOW. Aug 1 (Interfax) - Moscow has set a new record of electricity consumption in July, Moscow power distribution company Moesk told Interfax on Monday.
"Energy consumption records were broken in the last weeks of July due to the hot weather in Moscow and the Moscow region. An absolutely new summer maximum was registered on July 28," a source said.
Consumption was at 11,876 megawatts with an average temperature of 25.7 degrees Celsius, which is 187 megawatts up from 2010.
The summer peak in energy consumption was registered on August 4, 2010, he recalled. "At the time, the energy consumption in the Moscow region was at 11,689 megawatts at 2 p.m. with a temperature of plus 36 degrees [Celsius]," the spokesman said.
Despite the growing electricity consumption, the Moscow regional grid operated in a stable manner, with no disruptions, he said.
"Overall, summer energy consumption figures are the maximal absolute values. For example, last winter the highest power consumption, 17,216 megawatts, was registered on December 2 at a temperature of minus 15 degrees, which is 35 megawatts below the maximum absolute capacity, registered in the 2009-2010 fall/winter period," the source added.
