Ukraine exports mere 380,000 tonnes of grain in July
KYIV. Aug 3 (Interfax) - Ukraine exported almost 380,000 tonnes of grain in July, which is one of the lowest figures for many years, the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation (UAC) said.
According to the UAC, wheat exports in the first month of the new marketing year (July 2011, June 2012) came to 160,000 tonnes, that for corn 40,000 tonnes and for barley 170,000 tonnes.
"The very low level of grain exports from Ukraine is a reflection of the destructive effect of export duties in sterilizing profitability, which the international market could give, for our producers," the press service said, citing Serhiy Stoyanov, the UAC's director general.
As reported, Ukraine introduced duties on the export of wheat (of 9%, or at least EUR 17 per tonne), corn (12%, or at least EUR 20 per tonne), and barley (14%, or at least EUR 23 per tonne) for the period from July 1, 2011 until January 1, 2012.
Farmers have criticized the authorities for the adoption of a law on the introduction of duty on grain exports for the second half of 2011. They said that this has led to a fall in the prices on the market, which means the production cost of the crops is not covered.
