France's SNF mulling development of polyacrylamide production at Saratovorgsintez

SARATOV. Aug 3 (Interfax) - France's SNF is looking into organizing the production of polyacrylamide, which is used for filtering water, at the industrial site of Lukoil's subsidiary LLC Saratovorgsintez in the Saratov Region, Saratov Governor Pavel Ipatov told journalists on Wednesday.

He said that the possibility of implementing this project in Saratov had been discussed on Tuesday at meeting between the region's administration and SNF president, Rene Pich. "So far, there is only a protocol of intention. The main thing is that the site where this project might be carried is the sole one of its type in Russia and it is in Saratov," Ipatov said.

Forecast investment in the project is over 1 billion rubles over an implementation period of two to three years.

"Demand for this production, which is used, in part, for oil well irrigation, is on the rise throughout the world. This is a very promising area. Therefore, the chances for this project being realized are very high," Ipatov said.

The governor's office told Interfax that LLC Saratovorgsintez is the sole producer of acrylonitrile and acetonitrila in Russia, and one of the country's two producers of sodium cyanide.

This product is used as a raw materials for synthetic plastics, synthetic fibers and rubber, which is used in areas such as medicine and the mining industry.

Lukoil's first vice president Vladimir Nekrasov was earlier quoted as saying that the company plans to invest around $230 million into the development in LLC Saratovorgsintez, including the development of acrylonitrile, phenol and acetone production.
