Ukrainian govt will not settle before all opposition figures are jailed - Our Ukraine
KYIV. Aug 5 (Interfax) - Verkhovna Rada member Oles Doniy (Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense faction) has said that the arrest of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko continues political reprisals by the incumbent Ukrainian authorities.
"If someone did not understand after the unjustified arrest of Yury Lutsenko that it was only the beginning of the dismantling of freedom and democracy and the launch of political reprisals, now they should look the truth in the eyes. And the truth is that this government will not settle before the entire political opposition is either behind the bars or in exile," the press service of People's Self-Defense quotes Doniy as saying.
He does not doubt that repressions and reprisals will affect everyone.
He said Tymoshenko's arrest "strikingly exemplifies that the government will not be stopped by the authority of any politician, it will not heed the public opinion or pay attention to views abroad."
"Tymoshenko's arrest has nothing to do with the law. The arrest is just a typical and indicative example of political repression and purposeful intimidation of the public," the deputy said.
Judge Rodion Kireyev, presiding in the gas case of Yulia Tymoshenko in Kyiv's Pechersky Court, supported the motion of the prosecution for Tymoshenko's arrest on Friday.
The court ruling says that "systemic abuses by the defendant, for instance, her obstruction of the interrogation of witnesses," were the reason for changing the measure of restraint from a travel ban to taking her into custody.
