Rosselkhoznadzor to inspect Brazilian meat factories in Q4
MOSCOW. Aug 29 (Interfax) - Russia's veterinary and phytosanitary oversight service Rosselkhoznadzor plans to inspect Brazilian meat manufacturers in the fourth quarter of 2011and decide before the end of the year whether the curbs on Brazilian meat imports should be extended or lifted.
"The inspection mission will last a couple of weeks as usual. We hope an absolutely concrete result will be achieved, which will allow us to make the decision," Rosselkhoznadzor spokesman Alexei Alexeyenko told Interfax.
"The measures being taken by the Brazilian side are not adequate to the risks. Therefore, we have made up our minds to inspect their factories after monitoring the products. And then we will decide whether meat imports from three states will be resumed and what we will do about meat factories from other states," he said.
Russia banned meat imports from three states - Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul and Parana - over violations of the Russian veterinary sanitary standards. The curbs affected 89 factories.
Subsequently, 37 other suppliers were blacklisted. It emerged in early August that the Brazilian veterinary service had banned meat exports to Russia from 103 factories, including 66 which had been under Rosselkhoznadzor curbs.
Rosselkhoznadzor then suspended meat imports from three other Brazilian factories.
The ban currently applies to 129 suppliers.
