Jincheng City aims to become top CBM producer by 2015

Shanghai. September 1. INTERFAX-CHINA - Jincheng City in north China's coal-rich Shanxi Province eyes annual coalbed methane (CBM) output of six billion cubic meters (bcm) by 2015, according to the city's five-year development plan issued Aug. 31.

The proposed target would make the city China's largest CBM production base, and is almost four times its 2010 output of 1.57 bcm.

With more than 50 billion tons of coal reserves, Jincheng has proven CBM reserves of roughly 6.8 trillion cubic meters (tcm), approximately 70 percent of Shanxi's total.

Under the development plan, the city aims to liquefy 900 million cubic meters (mcm) of CBM per year by 2015 for transmission to other parts of China.

China's proven CBM reserves are estimated at 36.7 tcm, the third largest in the world behind Russia and Canada.

China produced only 10 bcm of CBM last year, but aims to increase annual output to 50 bcm by 2020.
