Russia, China to sign agreement on Tianwan NPP phase two Sept 15

TOMSK. Sept 13 (Interfax) - Russia and China will sign an agreement needed to activate the general contract for the construction of phase two of the Tianwan nuclear power plant in China on September 15, Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia's state Rosatom corporation, said during a working visit to Tomsk.

"We'll be signing the agreement needed to activate the contract to build the generating units in China soon," Kiriyenko said.

Rosatom spokesman Sergei Novikov said the agreement would be signed during a session of the inter-governmental commission's sub-commission on nuclear power.

Construction of phase two, for the third and fourth blocks, was agreed at the end of August 2010. Russia's Atomstroyexport built phase one (first and second blocks). The contract covers construction of four power blocks each equipped with a VVER-1000 reactor. JNPC will design and supply equipment for the non-nuclear sections of the facility.

The companies will begin pouring concrete for the foundation of the third block in December 2012.
