Putin sure eurozone problems will be solved

SOCHI. Sept 16 (Interfax) - Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has said he has no doubts that the European Union will be able to stabilize the situation in the eurozone.

"This policy requires certain endurance and determination. But I have no doubts that they will cope with these problems in the eurozone, just as they will in the United States, leaning on the foundations of the American economy," Putin said at an investment forum in Sochi on Friday.

Paris and Berlin perfectly understand responsibility for the decisions they make, which are not only a response to society's position, Putin said.

"As for the steps being taken by the leading economies, I think the leaders of these countries, France and the Federal Republic [of Germany], are not only acting under the public opinion's pressure but are also being guided by certain economic-strategic reasons," Putin said.

The leading European Union economies are reasonably trying to persuade their EU partners experiencing economic crises to do something on their own to deal with the problems, he said.

"I think they have every reason to get the problematic countries not just wait for assistance from the leading economies through issuing securities and restructuring their debts but take some measures and steps on their own to restructure their economy and the said debts," he said.

At the same time, Putin said he was sure that, while encouraging the so-called problematic EU members to act independently, France and Germany will help them as well.

"It seems to me that the leading European economies will back the problematic countries but will encourage them to work to improve the situation using their own resources as much as possible," he said.
