Gas prices for Ukrainian people should not go up - PM

KYIV. Oct 24 (Interfax) - Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said he hopes that gas charges to the country's citizens will not be increased.

"We are aiming to agree with the Russian Federation on an acceptable price for gas. My last meeting with the Russian Prime Minister [Vladimir Putin] provides grounds for thinking that an agreement is pretty near," Azarov said during 1+1 television interview Sunday evening.

"That's why we are not now planning any gas tariff increases," the prime minister said.

Azarov also said that prices would need to be raised only "in the extreme event that that murderous price for gas that flows from the January 2009 agreement remains in place."

"Let's not jump ahead and frighten off that bird of success that, as it seems to me, should in the end alight in Ukraine," he said.
